We are back to normal, connecting with local communities again. Local connections is what Compassionate Communities is all about, passing on our knowledge and learning about the experiences within communities helps to build more resilient communities.

Our focus for the past few months has been on ‘death preparedness’, how we can prepare for a good death. A draft policy for Northern Ireland on Advance Care Planning has gone through public consultation; we expect it to be launched later this year.

Already we are busy introducing to the public Advance Care Planning, the time to start thinking and talking about is now. Every person, 18 years and over with the mental capacity to make plans about their future care needs, should be having a conversation about their wishes with those closest to them.

Death preparedness conversations have taken place in numerous places since the launch of NI’s first Advance Care Planning Week in April. A total of 161 conversations have taken place, in Derry~Londonderry, Bellaghy and Omagh. With more Advance Care Planning Introduction Sessions booked over the coming months we are excited that so many people appreciate the importance of planning ahead.
